| Viking humble Chelsea ![]() Terry scored on his first start of the season Viking 4-2 Chelsea (Agg 5-4) E-mail your reaction to Football Talk Former Manchester United player Erik Nevland scored three minutes from time to dump sorry Chelsea out of the Uefa Cup. The goal made it the third consecutive year that the Blues have been beaten in the first round of the competition by one of European football's minnows. Lowly Viking joined St Gallen and Hapoel Tel-Aviv in inflicting humiliating early defeats on the expensively-assembled London side.
But Nevland, who made two starts during his time at Old Trafford, capitalised on some poor defending to secure a 4-2 win on the night and a 5-4 victory on aggregate for the home side. Claudio Ranieri's side looked vulnerable in defence throughout the game and cannot complain at their fate. They went behind in the ninth minute, when Carlo Cudicini flapped at a cross and Morten Berre bundled the ball home from close range. More poor play at the back gifted Viking their second goal. Both Terry and Robert Huth ran to Nevland, allowing the striker to back-heel to the unmarked Peter Kopteff, who evaded William Gallas's lunge before hammering a powerful shot past Cudicini.
England international Frank Lampard stroked the ball past Frode Olsen from nine yards after a neat pass by Gianfranco Zola. Yet the visitors failed to learn the lessons of the first half and were culpable for Viking's third goal. They failed to clear a corner after an hour and Nevland headed ino the net from the edge of the six-yard box. Ranieri's team seemed to have escaped when Terry met Graeme Le Saux's corner at the far post to head high into the roof of the net. But Nevland popped up at the end, getting in front of Le Saux to steer a left-wing cross in from close range, to ensure that Chelsea were punished for a careless performance.
