James Meredith signed for York City from Shewsbury Town in 2009
York City have beaten off competition from other clubs to sign defender James Meredith for another year.
The Australian-born 23-year-old had attracted interest from Football League and Scottish Premier League teams, including Kilmarnock.
Manager Gary Mills told BBC Radio York: "I think it's massive. He's a massive part of my plans for next season.
"I wanted James Meredith and sometimes you have to work that little bit harder to get the player that you want."
Meredith joined the Blue Square Bet Premier club in May 2009 from Shrewsbury Town, following a season on loan with the Shrews' Shropshire neighbours AFC Telford United.
Mills added: "He's improved immensely, I feel - certainly since I've been at the club since last October.
"I'm absolutely delighted to say that a Scottish Premier League club in Kilmarnock have offered him a contract and numerous others showed him interest in him, but he's stayed at York."
