Early signs please new boss Foyle

Martin Foyle
Foyle was manager of Port Vale for three years from 2004

York City manager Martin Foyle was pleased at how his players responded to his ideas after earning a 1-1 draw at Salisbury on Saturday.

"I threw a lot at them last week and they took it all in," said Foyle.

On the mistake that put Salisbury ahead he said: "The most pleasing thing was that their heads didn't drop."

City's Setanta Shield second round tie against Barrow at Holker Street on Tuesday will go ahead subject to a pitch inspection.

New signing Adam Smith and striker Richard Brodie are cup-tied, but as both men were substitutes on Saturday, Foyle does not plan to make changes to the side that drew with Salisbury.

I hate losing games, I hate losing a game of cards, that's the type of person I am

"Why change something when it's doing alright?

"Barrow had a fantastic result against Brentford in the FA Cup to go through and draw Middlesbrough away. They're on cloud nine, so from my point of view it's a good time to play them," said Foyle.

"We're going to take the Setanta Shield seriously. I've just got in here, I hate losing games, I hate losing a game of cards and that's the type of person I am," he added.

And after earning a point in his first game in charge, the former Port Vale boss called on his new side to be more clinical when in sight of goal.

"We've probably got to be a little bit more ruthless in front of goal, we'll get on to the training pitch and improve that," said Foyle.

"At the end when we started pressing, Salisbury were panicking a little bit and I thought we were going to get the winner."
