York City manager Colin Walker praised the "shift of work" put in by his mid-table side at Torquay on Saturday.
Walker made several personnel and positional changes and he was rewarded with a 0-0 draw against the side second in the Blue Square Premier League.
In a game of few chances Jimmy Beadle came closest to scoring for York with a first-half header which went just wide.
Walker said: "For someone supposed to be a centre-half his last two games in midfield have been top drawer."
Walker felt that York were the better side for much of the first half. "I thought we surprised them a little bit in the shape that we played and the personnel where we put them."
Teenager Andy McWilliams played his second full game at left wing-back.
"He did fantastic for a young lad. 18 years of age, thrown in, and today he got in the team on merit," Walker added.

"Simon Rusk did really well at right wing-back, Ben Purkiss ran out of legs right at the end but he did really, really well, and the three centre-halves were as solid as a rock."
That was important as Torquay, who recalled all six of the players rested for Thursday's trip to Rushden and Diamonds, won ten corners.
York centre-back Danny Parslow said: "We hung in there and dug in. Coming down to Torquay and getting a point is not a bad result. It's just finding that consistency. That's what gets you into the play-offs."
Parslow also made a crucial second-half tackle on Torquay's top scorer Lee Phillips as he turned and shaped up to score. "I just managed to hold my ground and poke it away," he added.
Parslow has just turned 22 and hopes to be part of a promotion-chasing side next season.
"We've got a good nucleus of players here and maybe there'll be bigger and better things here next year," he said.
The York fans' star player will be revealed before Tuesday's home game against Farsley, but Walker has already made up his mind.
"For me the player of the year has been Martyn Woolford. He's trying and trying and [at Torquay] things didn't work for him but he still works his trolley off for the team," he added.
