Wrexham suffer eighth successive postponement

Wrexham

Wrexham's clash with Stevenage on Saturday has been called off - the eighth successive game the club have had postponed.

Dean Saunders' side have not played since 15 December, with their last league game on 5 December.

Fans and staff had worked hard this week to clear snow from the Racecourse pitch but to no avail.

The Blue Square Premier game at Barrow on Tuesday night is already off as the hosts are set to play an FA Trophy tie.

"I'm very concerned by the fixture backlog," said boss Dean Saunders, even before the Stevenage postponement.

Wrexham are on their longest run without a game for 32 years since the big freeze of 1978.

The Dragons must now fit in 28 games in the remaining 14 weeks of the season.

"We will have to play on Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday then again on Saturday," said Saunders.

"And it could be worse if the weather doesn't get any better.

"We will have to play all of the games eventually, but it will be a severe test of my squad."

Wrexham's 1-0 FA Trophy loss to Altrincham on 15 December was their last outing.

And they have not played in the league since a 2-1 loss at York City on 5 December.

606: DEBATE

Wrexham have had games against Mansfield, AFC Wimbledon, Altrincham (home and away) and Gateshead (home and away) called off due to the freezing weather.

Now Saturday's visit of Stevenage has gone the same way as the Racecourse pitch is unfit.

The Mansfield game has been rearranged for 2 February while the visit to Gateshead has been rescheduled for 23 March.
