Wrexham fans help clear snow from Racecourse pitch

About 20 volunteers have helped ground staff begin to clear snow from Wrexham FC's Racecourse pitch.

It came after the club appealed to fans to help clear the pitch, or face having an eighth successive game postponed.

Supporters were asked to bring "snow shovels, brushes and wheelbarrows" from 1000 GMT on Wednesday onwards.

The club said there was a "fighting chance" the game against Stevenage Borough this weekend would go ahead, if conditions improved as forecast.

Lyndsay Jones, chairman of the Wrexham Supporters Trust, said people were "fed up" with no football.

He added: "We're not playing well, but some football is better than no football.

"The pitch was covered in snow on Monday and there's not many ground staff anymore, so if anyone can help, it would be good."

Manager Dean Saunders has said he is "very concerned by the fixture backlog," with seven games already postponed.

The Blue Square Premier team are due to face Stevenage Borough at the Racecourse on Saturday.

The club urged supporters to turn up on Wednesday morning with "any snow shovels, brushes and wheelbarrows to help clear the surface..."

It added: "With temperatures reportedly due to take a turn for the better on Thursday and Friday, we have a fighting chance of getting the game on."

"But we need to get the snow off, otherwise we might find ourselves with a waterlogged surface instead."
