Wrexham set to replace boss Carey
Wrexham manager Brian Carey
Wrexham have struggled near the foot of League Two under Carey
Wrexham will seek to appoint a senior manager to oversee team affairs and hope to begin talks with potential candidates early next week.

Chairman Neville Dickens told BBC Sport that boss Brian Carey may continue at the club but not in his current role.

A statement on the club's website says that the new man will work alongside present staff at the Racecourse Ground.

"Brian's done a good job, but we need to review the situation with the directors," said Dickens.

"We're in discussions with a number of people."

Carey is believed to be keen to stay at the club, with the new appointee helping his development as a coach.

Names linked with the new senior manager's post include Stan Ternent, Brian Flynn, Brian Little and Mark Wright.

Birmingham City scout Ternent knows Wrexham chief executive Anthony Fairclough from his time as manager at Burnley.

Former Dragons boss Flynn, who brought Carey to the club, still lives locally and knows many of the players because of his duties as Wales Under-21 boss.

Like Flynn, ex-Liverpool defender Wright lives locally and the former Chester manager is experienced in the lower leagues.

Little is hugely experienced as a manager and was in charge of Carey at Leicester in the early 1990s.

Ex-Dragons boss Denis Smith, Colin Addison, Dean Saunders and Wales assistant manager Roy Evans - who has been helping with training at the Racecourse - have already ruled themselves out of the running for the new Wrexham job.

Carey will be in charge of the team for Wednesday night's league match against Wycombe and Saturdays FA Cup game at Peterborough.

Wrexham are currently one spot off the foot of League Two with nine points from 13 games.

Former Dragons defender Carey took over as caretaker manager at the Racecourse in January following the sacking of Smith, moving up from the backroom staff into his first senior role.

The Irishman helped lift Wrexham out of the relegation zone with four wins from their final five games, securing their league status on the final day of the season and winning a two-year permanent contract.

But having had a chance to build his squad over the summer, Wrexham's struggles near the foot of the league continued, with Dickens telling the BBC's Sport Wales programme last month that Carey's job was on the line if results did not improve.

  • Wrexham have postponed their 17 November game at Mansfield Town because of international call-ups, a new date yet to be confirmed.
