Maynor Figueroa signs new Wigan Athletic contract

Figueroa has been a key figure in the Wigan defence this season

Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa has put an end to speculation about his future by signing an improved contract with the club until the summer of 2012.

Figueroa has been the subject of fervent reported transfer interest during January.

However, the Honduran defender, 26, is delighted to put an end to the stories, saying: "I'm glad the talk is over - now I can concentrate 100% on Wigan."

Manager Roberto Martinez said: "Maynor is settled here and wants to do well."

He added: "He is a top professional, undoubtedly one of the best I have worked with in my time in the game.

"I am very happy we have been able to reward him in this manner and put an end to all the silliness surrounding him in recent weeks.

"He has never spoken to me about wanting to leave the club. I have said all along that if we decide to sell any of our most consistent performers, it will only be when the time is right for Wigan, with that money reinvested in order to move the club up to the next level."

Figueroa first joined the club in December 2007 from Deportivo Olimpia and went on to start every match of the 2008-09 league season.

His fine form this season, including a sensational 70-yard strike against Stoke City, prompted reported interest, referred to as "vicious and potentially damaging", from other clubs, one of which was said to be Sunderland.
