West Bromwich Albion utility man Gonzalo Jara has signed an improved three-year contract at The Hawthorns.

The Chile international, who joined the Baggies from Colo Colo a year ago, was originally tied to Albion until 2013 - but has now extended that by a season.

Jara, 24, missed the last three months of the season with a broken toe, but recovered in time to go the World Cup.

He is Albion's fourth player to sign a new deal this summer after Chris Brunt, Graham Dorrans and Youssouf Mulumbu.

"He has proved an excellent acquisition and played a big part in our promotion success last season before his unfortunate injury," Albion head coach Roberto di Matteo told the club's website.

"He is a total professional, has a terrific attitude and his versatility is a real asset to the squad.

"Gonzo has all the attributes needed to play in the Premier League and I believe he has a big role to play this season within the framework of the team."

Jara played at centre-half, in midfield and in both full-back roles for Albion last season before his season was cut short in the 2-2 FA Cup draw at Reading in February.
