West Brom to support Chile appeal

West Brom have decided to wear a "Help Chile" logo on their shirts when they play Sheffield Wednesday in support of team-mate Gonzalo Jara.

The Chile international defender is in his homeland recovering from a broken metatarsal, and had to evacuate his family during last month's earthquake.

"We were greatly concerned about the well-being of Gonzalo and his family," said Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace.

"We were relieved to hear they were safe, and want to play our part."

West Brom are without a season-long shirt sponsor in the Championship, but have agreed various one-off deals over the course of the current campaign.

Previously they raised awareness for the Haiti appeal, now they are supporting the people of Chile.

"Gonzalo has asked the club to pledge any funds raised to the relief work being undertaken in his home city of Talcahuano, which we are only too happy to do," Peace noted.

The massive earthquake registered 8.8 on the Richter Scale, striking the South American country at the end of February.

Jara, 24, was in the capital city Santiago at the time, and helped his wife and children from their flat to a nearby park.

He has since appeared on a 24-hour fundraising telethon as Chile comes to terms with the loss of hundreds of lives.
