Morrison views Boateng as mentor

James Morrison
Morrison says Boateng made him a better player at Middlesbrough

West Brom midfielder James Morrison is relishing the prospect of going toe-to-toe with George Boateng when the Baggies host Hull City on Saturday.

Dutchman Boateng took the Scottish international under his wing when both played for Middlesbrough.

"I came up the ranks and he was a big part of the team, one of the senior players," Morrison told BBC WM.

"He was great with the young players, he always talks to the young ones and gives advice."

Morrison admits that the former Aston Villa midfielder was something of a mentor to him during their time together at the Riverside.

"He's been great for me. In games he was always at me, trying to get the best out of me which is good," said Morrison.

"It'll be nice to see him, he keeps in touch, and I'll be happy to try and get the three points over him."

Hull have been a revelation in their first season in the top flight, moving into third position thanks to consecutive wins over Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham.

"I think it's taken everyone by surprise," said Morrison. "Fair play to them, they've had a game plan and a structure and it's been creating problems for other teams, picking up vital wins.

"They've proven me wrong and proven everyone wrong. But we're looking forward to them coming to us because we believe we can win."
