Ishmael Miller was picked up from Manchester City's reserves |
West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Mowbray admits he feared signing Ishmael Miller might not prove value for money. Miller made his loan move from Manchester City permanent in January for 900,000 and has scored 10 goals so far as the Baggies head for promotion.
"You have to put it in some context. He was playing left wing for Manchester City reserves," Mowbray told BBC WM.
"At the time of negotiating the fee it didn't look such a snip but four months later it's a decent bit of business."
Miller scored nine goals in his first 13 appearances for Albion before injury hampered his progress.
Tony Mowbray is delighted with the way the Ishmael Miller deal has worked out |
The emergence of Roman Bednar in his absence has increased the pressure on Miller to rediscover his touch in front of goal, but Mowbray is confident that will happen.
"Hopefully Ishmael can continue to flourish and continue to score goals and enhance his reputation," he added.
Miller's permanent transfer was one of five deals done by Albion in January but Mowbray is also aware he still has to secure the futures of Zoltan Gera, Martin Albrechtsen and Kevin Phillips who are all out of contract in the summer.
"I'd like to keep all three at the club but in modern day football and the way the Bosman ruling works players are well within their rights to see what other offers come along.
"That's fine by me and as long as they keep applying themselves and stay focussed on our team while they're here, they'll have no problems," Mowbray continued to BBC WM.
