Mackay's young side are performing above expectations this season

Watford boss Malky Mackay is expecting other clubs to be interested in his star performers, but is unsure whether any firm bids will come forward.

Striker Danny Graham's 12 goals this season have increased speculation a bid could be placed in January.

"Do I expect a bid? I don't know. Do I expect interest? Absolutely. Why wouldn't there be?" the Hornets manager told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"But you can never tell what other people are going to do."

Mackay has been forced to build his side on a tight budget and is aware that should a good offer come in for one of his star players, the club could be forced to sell.

"It's something I've always known so it's no more a concern than it was six months ago or a year ago," he said.

"We're in a position where we need financial help.

"Would you rather be in a situation where none of your players are talked about? Or in a position with international footballers that people covet?"

And the former Celtic defender, who has led the Hornets to eighth in the Championship, has reminded his players that the lure of a big money move might not the the best option for some of his youngsters.

"It's not always about that move, it's about where are you happy? Where are you playing well?" he added.

"You find a lot of people who move on it doesn't go right for them from then on in."

After finding out he will be without Stephen McGinn for a month with a fractured cheekbone, Mackay has also learned fellow midfielder Michael Bryan will be out for a fortnight with an ankle injury.
