Tranmere Rovers have signed former Sheffield Wednesday youth defender Nick Wood on a one-year contract.
The 19-year-old joined Rovers on a week's trial and impressed during pre-season matches against Mansfield and Nottingham Forest, scoring one goal.
Tranmere boss Les Perry told the club's website: "He's a talented young player and he has applied himself well here.
"He has fitted in well, put in two good performances and now there will be lot of competition for places defensively."
Wood added: "I delighted to sign my contract and hopefully I can push my way into the side and get a regular starting place."
