Tranmere utility player Gareth Edds says the club can only move forward following their 1-0 defeat against Stockport at Prenton Park on Monday.
Managerless Rovers are in the bottom three, five points from safety.
"I think there were positives tonight and we can move forward," Edds told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"As a team I think we have the quality to get ourselves out of trouble. If we can get that self-belief we can then move forward."
Tranmere's goal difference is the worst in League One at minus 18 and Edds believes the side need to concentrate on their defensive work if they are to get out of trouble.
"We've shipped a lot of goals over the course of the season so we need to start keeping clean sheets," Edds continued. "You've got to build on those bases first.
"Last year we kept the most clean sheets in the league and you can build success on that. If we can do that and build success from keeping clean sheets - it's the way forward."
