Carl Baker scored from the penalty spot to give Stockport victory over 10-man Tranmere at Prenton Park.
Baker converted in the 67th minute after home goalkeeper Luke Daniels had been dismissed for bringing down James Vincent when through on goal.
The managerless hosts made a lot of the early running, but County looked the more assured side as the match wore on.
Craig Curran and Ian Thomas-Moore went close for the hosts late on but Stockport held on for a valuable win.
Tranmere caretaker manager Les Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"When chances are looked at we'll probably think we were a little bit unfortunate.
"But once [Luke Daniels] was sent off, we had four or five excellent chances to equalise which we never took. So it ends in a defeat."
