Welsh keen for games at Tranmere

Welsh had been at Hull for four years after starting his career at Anfield.

New Tranmere signing John Welsh is aiming to kick start his career at Prenton Park after joining on a two-year contract from Hull City.

The 25-year-old midfielder spent part of last season on loan at Carlisle and Bury, but is now hoping to get a regular berth in John Barnes' side.

"I need to get some games under my belt and hopefully play 40 games a season," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"Hopefully the manager will give me a chance to do that."

Welsh added: "I'm a passionate player, and I'll be going for every 50-50 and 60-40, trying to win tackles and get the players on the ball who can create stuff and win games for us."

Welsh joins other recent recruits Alan Mahon and Paul McLaren, and believes there is enough quality in the squad to mount another promotion challenge.

"Looking through the squad, there are some good players here, so I don't see any reason why we can't do it again - it was so close last season. I'm sure we'll be there soon."

The former England under-21 goalkeeper spent four seasons at Hull, after starting his career at Liverpool, and he's now looking forward to playing under an Anfield legend.

"He wants to play football and he wants to bring the passion to the club. I think I'm a passionate player and I like to play football so it was brilliant to hear that from the manager."
