Anderton could be looking for another club |
Darren Anderton seems set to leave Tottenham as manager Glenn Hoddle continues to reshape his squad for next season. Hoddle wants to reduce the age of the playing staff at White Hart Lane and convince the board that he is still the right man for the job.
Teddy Sheringham, Steffen Freund and Les Ferdinand have already left the club.
The high-earning Anderton, 31, who played only 20 league matches last season, still has one year left on his contract.
But Hoddle is believed to be ready to let the midfielder leave if there are any takers for the former England international.
As Spurs unveiled their latest signing, 20-year-old striker Helder Postiga, Hoddle said: "We might have to ease the budget and balance it out by letting someone go.
"We don't have to sell to bring fresh blood in but I think the squad needs to be cut and we need to balance it off."
Anderton is Tottenham's longest-serving player and earns iabout 30,000 a week.
But his 10 years at the club have been beset by injury, a situation that is unlikely to improve as the player gets older.
Hoddle, who is said to be under mounting pressure to revive the club's fortunes, indicated on Thursday that he would try to bring in two more signings.
West Ham striker Freddie Kanoute and Blackburn midfielder Tugay have been linked with Spurs.
And it appears that Anderton may be the man to make way to offset the cost of their arrival.
