Poyet set for retirement
Tottenham's Gus Poyet
Poyet plans just one more season as a player
Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet looks set to retire as a player at the end of next season.

But the Uruguayan international insisted he planned to help the London club qualify for European competition before he hangs up his boots.

"It is 75% certain I will stop playing when this present contract ends next season," said Poyet.

"I won't decide for sure until next season starts, but that is the way I feel now and, before I finish, I would like to help Spurs qualify for a European competition."

Poyet has already enjoyed success on the continent, winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1995 with Real Zaragoza and again with Chelsea in 1998.

And he added: "Once you have played in the European competitions you want to do it again and again.

"It would be just great for Tottenham players to have the chance and I hope to help us get there."

It has been a long time out, but it is great to be back with the lads again

Spurs goalkeeper Neil Sullivan

Poyet, 35, recently faced two major knee operations before returning to Tottenham's starting line-up.

After a brief slump, Spurs have enjoyed a recent resurgence, boosted by Poyet's new role behind strikers Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Keane.

They are now eighth in the Premiership and could move up to sixth if they beat West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Sullivan thumbs up

Spurs could welcome goalkeeper Neil Sullivan back on to the bench for that game, after the Scotland international returned to training for the first time since breaking his thumb in August.

Sullivan revealed: "It has been a long time out, but it is great to be back with the lads again.

"I've had a couple of days with [goalkeeping coach] Hans Segers and feel like I'm ready to put myself up for selection on Sunday."
