| Wednesday, 7 August, 2002, 14:11 GMT 15:11 UK Spurs face Morientes wait Morientes hit three goals during the World Cup Tottenham boss Glenn Hoddle has confirmed the club's determination to land Spain international Fernando Morientes from Real Madrid. Spurs are in talks with Real about the striker but no deal seems imminent with the clubs trying agree a transfer fee. Real are believed to want 15m and Spurs director of football David Pleat admitted: "The actual transfer fee is more than we were led to believe". Spurs' negotiation party is being led by chairman Daniel Levy and they are believed to prefer paying about 2.5m-a-season on a five-year deal.
Another problem could arise with Real admitting that they will not be signing Brazilian Ronaldo, which would have paved the way for Morientes to move on. "Daniel (Levy) and I are working together in pursuit of the players that I have targeted," said Hoddle. "It can be frustrating but he has been one of the most active chairman in recent months in his determination to bring extra quality to the club. "Our moves for Rivaldo and Morientes illustrate our ambition plus the support I receive from Daniel and the board. "We are a big club with a demand for quality that matches our aspirations."
He added: "We are all pulling together at the club and willing to spend the money required. "But the key considerations are availability, quality to improve the current squad and value." The move comes just a week after Spurs were ridiculed for declaring their interest in Brazil striker Rivaldo. Hoddle is desperate to secure a new striker and, even though Kevin Phillips and Robbie Keane have been linked with the club, both seems set to stay at Sunderland and Leeds respectively. And Hoddle can also forget about signing Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o from Real Mallorca. The player's agent, Wille McKay, said: "Samuel first met Glenn Hoddle in Madrid three months ago. "He liked Hoddle and was very keen on a move but when Spurs made an enquiry to Mallorca a week ago they were told he was not for sale, as Mallorca must give 50% of any transfer this season to Real Madrid." But Morientes is now the focus of Hoddle's attentions, though Spurs will have to pay upwards of 30,000-a-week in wages for the Spanish international. Morientes hit three goals for Spain during the World Cup to take his international strike rate to 17 in 28 games. He also boasts more than a goal every two games for Real Madrid. Levy added: "If the football market is to stay on an even keel, we are going to have to be far more creative in the way we structure deals while, at the same time, successfully acquiring the players on our target list. "Obviously we have a transfer budget but I would never wish to put the future of this club at risk from a financial perspective as other clubs have done." |
