Torquay United boss Paul Buckle insists he wants to stay with the club after being linked to the vacant manager's job at managerless Colchester.

Buckle said Colchester had approached the Gulls to speak to him, but he was keen for a new contract at Plainmoor.

"There was interest from Colchester but I haven't been for an interview," he told the club's website.

"I want to stay at Torquay United and I have agreed a new contract in principle. I am very happy at Torquay."

Buckle is set for talks with the Torquay board about his new deal on Thursday.

Chief executive Colin Lee said Buckle was keen to find out what the Gulls' long-term ambitions were before signing an extended deal.

With a proper plan the manager can be shown the future ambition of the club

Lee said: "Everyone has to be realistic, we are on a restricted budget and at the moment we are dealing with a situation where it is very important that there is a proper financial structure at the club.

"In the meeting with Paul on Thursday, it is important that these factors are discussed and explained.

"The club may not be in a position now to increase budgets, but with a proper and correct financial plan in place the manager can be shown the future ambition of the club."

Buckle, 38, led the Gulls to promotion from the Blue Square Premier last season.
