Colchester United's search for a new manager is unlikely to include approaching those currently employed.
The U's are looking to replace Paul Lambert who has quit to join League One rivals Norwich City.
A number of names have been linked with the post, including Torquay's Paul Buckle and Paul Tisdale of Exeter.
Colchester chief executive Steve Bradshaw told BBC Essex: "It would be hard for us to approach other clubs as we'd have to pay compensation."
Managers currently out of work linked with the vacancy are former Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd and ex-Reading manager Steve Coppell.
"We've already had a lot of interest from those looking for employment and the calibre is very high," said Steve Bradshaw.
Colchester are yet to agree compensation with Norwich for Paul Lambert and youth-team coach Joe Dunne remains in caretaker charge.
