Torquay have allowed striker Leon Constantine to join Port Vale on loan, with a view to a �20,000 move when the transfer window reopens in January. The 27-year-old joined the Gulls from Peterborough for �75,000 last December after a successful loan spell, but has only scored once this season.
However, Torquay have moved to replace him by signing Wycombe Wanderers striker Ian Stonebridge, 24, on loan.
Stonebridge is the fourth new player to arrive at Plainmoor this week.
He follows the signings of Paul Robinson, Anthony Lloyd and Craig Woodman by the Football League's bottom club.
Chairman Mike Bateson told the club website: "It grieves me to lose �55,000 on the Leon deal, but our position is such that changes needed to be made at almost any cost." Boss Leroy Rosenior added: "It hasn't worked out for Leon, and it's best that we both cut our losses.
"I am very pleased to have brought in the new players this week, and I am looking forward to exciting times ahead."
Stonebridge has scored just once in 14 appearances for Wycombe this season.
He will be hoping for a successful second spell in Devon, after scoring 45 league and cup goals in a five-year stint at Plymouth between 1999 and 2004.
