Swindon Town midfielder Michael Timlin has apologised to fans for his penalty miss which sent his side crashing out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
The 25-year-old blazed the ball over the bar as Swindon went down 4-2 in the shoot-out to League One side Brentford.
"After that penalty I am extremely disappointed with myself," Timlin told BBC Wiltshire.
"I apologise to everyone associated with the club and the fans, because it wasn't good enough."
Timlin was named man-of-the-match but that was little consolation for the former Fulham man.
"I shouldn't have watched the keeper so much before my penalty," he said.
"I was concentrating on what he was doing and noticed that he was diving quite far across the goal.
"I thought if he was going to guess which way I was going I should put some power behind it but it should never have gone that high."
The Lambeth-born midfielder has only just returned to the County Ground after being recalled from a loan spell at Southend.
"We've got to learn from this, obviously it's a massive disappointment but we can't let it affect us on Saturday," he added.
"This game against Colchester is a must-win. It's not going to be pretty at times but we need to get three points.
"We should never be in the position that we are in the league, we're too inconsistent.
"A few back-to-back results can get you up the league but you've got to earn the right to do that."
