Martinez angry at Trundle cheers

Lee Trundle applauds Swansea fans on Saturday at Ashton Gate

Roberto Martinez has hit out at Swansea City fans for cheering former player Lee Trundle during Saturday's 0-0 draw at Bristol City.

Trundle appeared as a late replacement but Martinez felt Swansea fans should have instead backed their own players.

"Trunds is a legend for our football club, but today he was not in our side," said the Swansea manager.

"It was disappointing in a way because... it seems that probably the point didn't count that much."

"Lee will be a [Swans] legend any time.

"But during the game it was a little bit disappointing to see that the fans wanted to appreciate that [Trundle's status with them] when the other players in our squad were fighting extremely hard to earn a point."

Martinez added: "It's important to know that every game at this level for us is a cup final and we need to take it and every point is important.

The Swansea boss also played down the possibility of Trundle, who is not a first-team regular at Bristol City, returning to the Welsh club.

"Those things don't work like that," said Martinez of the player who left them 16 months ago.

"Lee Trundle made his decision. He left in a very difficult position just a few days before the first league game.

"After that the players that stayed at Swansea need to receive huge credit because they've taken the club to Championship level and sometimes we are a bit romantic in football and love to look back and speak about these things.

"But I think we need to be realistic. We need to give a lot of credit to the players that stayed at the club and they promoted the football club."
