"He wrote me a letter after the game to apologise," said de Vries.
"Sometimes these things happen and I'm unlucky that it happened to me.
"I went for the ball, he went for the ball and unfortunately he took me out."
De Vries underwent surgery on Wednesday at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.
Birmingham keeper Artur Krysiak is on loan at the Swans, but Martinez is eager not to pile too much pressure on the teenager.
"Artur has been working with us for a while and he has a great deal of potential," said the Swans boss.
"But he is a young boy and we don't know him well enough to put him under huge pressure by relying on him as our only goalkeeper.
"We had a balance in that position with the experience of Dorus and the enthusiasm of Artur, and that's something we're looking to keep while Dorus is out.
"We are looking for someone who has experience of playing at the highest level who can help us in that position in the short term.
"There are a few options we're working on and we hope to get something done before Southampton, although that does not necessarily mean he'd definitely start.
"Then it would be question of sharpness and how Artur performs in training."
Meanwhile, midfielder Joe Allen has had his loan at Wrexham cut short after suffering ankle ligament damage.
The Wales Under-21 international has been an immediate hit at the Racecourse Ground after joining Wrexham on an initial one-month deal.
Allen enjoyed a dream debut as his 25-yard stunner inspired the Dragons to a 3-1 Blue Square Premier League win over York City.
But the 18-year-old midfielder was injured during a Wrexham training session and is expected to out of action for up to a month.
"We are waiting to assess Joe when he returns,'' physio Richie Evans told the Swansea website.
"But early indications suggest ankle ligament damage which will keep him out for between two and four weeks.''
