Trundle says he was made for the big occasions |
Swansea goal-scoring hero Lee Trundle says their 2-1 Football League Trophy win over Carlisle was for the fans. "The supporters are different class, it was a great day and we won it for them," he said after the Millennium Stadium final win before 42,000 fans.
"I love the big occasions, as a footballer you want to play in games like this. I know what I'm capable of and have confidence in my own ability.
"Carlisle are a very good side and made it tough for us."
The win was Swansea's second trophy triumph in a week, following Wednesday's 2-1 FAW Premier Cup win over Wrexham at the Racecourse.
The club has made it clear that promotion from League One remains their priority as they lie fifth in the table with seven games remaining.
But manager Kenny Jackett said they would savour the moment, as he even promised to give his players a day off training on Monday.
"It's just a great feeling at the moment, with the saves Carlisle's goalkeeper was making in the second half I was wondering if it would be our day.
"They are a very good side who kept coming back at us, but I'm pleased to come through it and to win in front of 30,000 of our fans is just fantastic."
Trundle's strike partner Adebayo Akinfenwa settled the result after latching onto the Scouser's flick for a late goal.
"I'm ecstatic, Trundle got it to me and I just had to push it in," said Akinfenwa.
"Carlisle were tough and took us all the way, but we just had to keep going until the end and the goal knocked the stuffing out of them.
"It's a beautiful feeling - I can't explain it - it's great for the fans and just the best day of my life."
