Argentina international full-back Marcos Angeleri is training with Sunderland with a view to a move to the Premier League club.
The 27-year-old spent last season in his native country with Estudiantes and has three caps for the national team.
Sunderland have confirmed that no deal has been agreed at this stage.
So far this summer the Black Cats have signed goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, defender Ahmed Al-Muhammadi and winger Cristian Riveros.
