Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has signed midfielder Cristian Riveros from Cruz Azul on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old Paraguay international has made 45 appearances for his country and will represent the side at the World Cup in South Africa next month.
"He is a very creative midfielder and a player that will enhance our attacking options," Bruce said.
The player joins fellow Paraguay player Paulo Da Silva at the Stadium of Light.
Riveros spent much of his career in Paraguay's domestic league, before moving to the Mexican side Cruz Azul after spells at San Lorenzo and Club Libertad.
He said: "The league here is very competitive and Sunderland have shown trust in me as a person and as a footballer.
"The history here is good and I'm delighted to be joining the club."
Before moving to the Stadium of Light, Bruce had an excellent track record as Wigan manager in signing players from Central and South America, notably Honduran Wilson Palacios and Ecuador's Antonio Valencia.
