Reid hopeful over survival battle

Reid has been in impressive form this season

Sunderland winger Andy Reid believes Saturday's 2-0 win against Stoke City could be the platform that helps the club to Premier League safety.

The win means the Wearsiders are now seven points off the drop-zone and Reid is hopeful the cushion can be retained between now and the end of the season.

"It's a massive result for us," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"Maybe where we are in the table will give us a bit of leeway to settle down and express ourselves in games."

The Republic of Ireland international has established himself as a fans' favourite since he joined the club 12 months ago.

Reid was a 5m signing by ex-manager Roy Keane in January 2008 from Championship side Charlton Athletic.

And, despite being sacrificed in Saturday's game as a late substitute, the Dublin-born winger admitted it was great to enjoy a vocal reception from supporters as he left the field.

"It's always nice when the fans show their appreciation, they turn up in their numbers to support us," he said.
