The Irishman told BBC Radio Newcastle: "I didn't come to Sunderland to be popular, I came here to be successful.

"Losing to Everton, Luton and Wigan I won't forget easily and I think the club deserves better than that.

"That's my responsibility and in a sense I guess I enjoy upsetting people. That's part of my nature I suppose."

The Black Cats have not enjoyed much success this season but Keane has never been a believer in fate.

Sticking to hard work and steely determination is what he demands from his players.

"We've got nothing from luck at this club and the players have worked very hard for me here," he said.

"When I became manager I was given a three year contract with the aim of getting the club into the Premiership.

"The danger in football is looking too far ahead. I've got to look at the bigger picture which is Sunderland Football Club."

With the youth team into the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup, Keane is determined to see success running throughout the club.

"It's important that all aspects of the club are running smoothly, the medical department, the scouting system, everything.
