Keane takes his side to bottom side Derby this weekend |
Sunderland boss Roy Keane has warned his side they must believe they can compete in the Premier League if they are to survive this season. Keane felt his players afforded Portsmouth striker Kanu too much respect during Saturday's 1-0 defeat and contributed to their own downfall.
"When players come on you've got to defend and our players stood off him," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.
"It's a concern because we earned the right to play in the Premier League."
Meanwhile, Keane was happy with the efforts of winger Andy Reid following his first start for Sunderland.
"Hopefully that will do him the world of good for a tough game next week," said Keane ahead of the trip to bottom side Derby.
"He's lacking a few games, but he put in some great balls from the set pieces and we're delighted with Reidy getting an hour under his belt."
