Davies nearly fit for Potters bow

Andrew Davies
Davies made over 50 Premier League appearances for Middlesbrough

Defender Andrew Davies believes he is nearly fit enough to be in contention to make his debut for Stoke City.

A combination of facial and knee injuries have kept Davies, who made a 1m switch from Southampton in August, out of action since March.

The 23-year-old told BBC Radio Stoke: "I've been working hard with the medical staff and after one or two weeks' training I'll be good to go.

"I'm looking forward to putting a Stoke shirt on and making my debut."

Versatile Davies can play at centre-half or at right-back but said that although he will be happy to play anywhere for the Potters, he feels he is at his best in the heart of defence.

"My best position is centre-half," he said. "I had a season with Middlesbrough at right-back but I think if I want to do the best for myself and for the team then it will be at centre-half.

This season is all about survival and if we manage that it will be an excellent achievement

Stoke defender Andrew Davies
"I feel I can definitely compete with the players we already have in that position and I'm looking forward to the challenge."

The former England Under-21 international began his career playing Premier League football with Middlesbrough and thinks the Potters have what it takes to survive in the top flight.

"I think it is a Premier League football club. We need to improve on a few things but that will come in time," said Davies.

"This season is all about survival and if we manage that it will be an excellent achievement."
