Ross is leaving St Mirren after two years with the Paisley club

Right-back Jack Ross will not be offered a new contract by St Mirren, the Paisley club have confirmed.

The 34-year-old signed from Scottish Premier League rivals Falkirk in May 2008 and made 80 appearances, all of them in the starting line-up.

But his contract expired this summer and the defender's departure has been announced only days after the arrival of Danny Lennon as manager.

Lennon on Thursday brought right-back David van Zanten back to the club.

The 28-year-old spent the latter half of the season with Hamilton Accies in the SPL, making just six appearances, after being released by Hibernian.

Van Zanten, who spent five years with the Buddies from 2003, will vie for the right-back position with David Barron.

Barron, who has often been used as a central defender or left-back, told BBC Scotland on Saturday that he hoped to move to what he believes is his more natural position should Ross leave the club.

Ross, who began his senior career with Clyde and also played for Hartlepool United, becomes the latest member of the squad Lennon inherited from Gus MacPherson to be axed from the squad.

Veteran central defender Chris Innes, who has been offered a one-year contract by First Division outfit Ross County, and midfielder Stephen O'Donnell have also been told they will not be offered new contracts.

It is believed that striker Tom Brighton will not be receiving a new deal from Lennon, who joined St Mirren from Cowdenbeath.

Assistant manager Andy Millen also left St Mirren on Friday, allowing Lennon to appoint his own backroom staff.
