New St Mirren manager Danny Lennon is confident he can be a success in the Scottish Premier League.

The 40-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Paisley side after leaving his post at Cowdenbeath.

"I'm a winner," said Lennon. "I know that will be more difficult here than it was at Cowdenbeath.

"But, with the right attitude and work ethic, I'm hopeful we can consolidate and win games here. I am very excited by this opportunity."

St Mirren approached Cowdenbeath on Friday and, after agreeing a compensation fee, announced Lennon as their new boss on Monday.

The sides will also meet in a pre-season friendly as part of the deal.

Last season, Lennon guided the Blue Brazil to their second successive promotion, with play-off success leading to a First Division place.

And now the former Hibs, Raith Rovers and Partick Thistle midfielder is looking forward to life in Scotland's top flight.

"Every manager - young and old - wants to test themselves to their full ability," he added. "That's the challenge I'm looking forward to here."

St Mirren, who are also seeking a buyer for the club, had been without a manager since ending Gus MacPherson's seven-year tenure after his side finished the season in tenth place.

And chairman Stewart Gilmour revealed that Lennon was the only candidate interviewed for the vacancy.

"Danny is one of the up-and-coming managers in Scotland and this is a great opportunity for St Mirren Football Club to give Danny the opportunity to take the club forward," explained Gilmour.

"We would like to thank Cowdenbeath for their co-operation in getting the deal done so speedily."

Whether MacPherson's assistant, Andy Millen, will remain as part of the backroom staff will be decided in the coming days.

Gilmour added: "We are interviewing all the staff and will announce the management team on Friday or Monday."

Asked about the prospect of working with Millen, Lennon said: "I don't have any problem with that. We'll just have to wait for the discussions throughout the week."
