Billy Stark plays down St Mirren managerial link

Billy Stark insists he is happy overseeing Scotland's youth set-up, with speculation linking him to the managerial vacancy at St Mirren.

The Buddies need to replace Gus MacPherson and Stark, who began his playing career with the Paisley club, is among the bookies' favourites.

"I enjoy my job and I've never thought about a change," said Stark.

"But in football nobody can ever take a view that I'm in a job for life - sometimes other people determine that."

Stark, who runs the Under-21 and Under-19 teams for Scotland, made his St Mirren debut in 1975 before moving on to Aberdeen eight years later.

The 53-year-old was managing Queen's Park before the Scottish Football Association approached him in 2008, having had spells in charge at Morton and St Johnstone.

Despite his reluctance to discuss the vacancy in Paisley, Stark did admit the post had allure and expressed sympathy for the outgoing MacPherson.

"In Scottish terms, it's an attractive position," he told BBC Scotland. "St Mirren have established themselves in the SPL and a lot of the credit goes to the previous management team.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't matter who you are. If you are at a club at that level then media, punters, maybe even people at the club, feel they want a change for some reason."

Stark, who served as assistant manager to Tommy Burns for three seasons at Celtic, is currently preparing the Scotland U19s for the European Championship elite round in Croatia, where they will play the hosts, Belgium and Montenegro.
