Southend United sign Lee Sawyer until end of season

Southend United have signed midfielder Lee Sawyer until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old's month-to-month deal with Blue Square Bet South side Woking was ended by mutual consent on Monday.

Sawyer has previously had two separate loan spells at Roots Hall in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons, when the Shrimpers were managed by Steve Tilson.

The former Chelsea youngster's second stint ended in acrimonious circumstances when he was sent home for failing to attend a team meeting.

He made a total of 22 appearances across both spells for the Shrimpers, scoring three goals, and also had loan stays with Coventry and Wycombe before being signed permanently by Barnet 12 months ago.

The Bees released him in the summer after he played four games and found the net once.
