Sturrock's backroom team was reduced last week

Southend United boss Paul Sturrock is confident the club's recent budget cuts will not affect his playing squad.

The Shrimpers released three members of their backroom staff last week following a strategic review of the club's finances.

Goalkeeping coach Lee Turner was among those made redundant.

But Sturrock expects to have continued financial support for his first team, telling BBC Essex: "In the end that's not been a feature."

The Southend manager was able to bring in strikers Jack Midson and Antonio German on loan ahead of Saturday's 2-2 FA Cup first round draw with Macclesfield.

Those deals, according to Sturrock, were made possible by the recent return of midfielder Michael Timlin and forward Nathaniel Jarvis to their parent clubs Swindon Town and Cardiff City respectively.

"There's a certain budget for the footballing side. With some of the players moving away again, it frees up some of the budget," he said.

The League Two outfit avoided being wound-up in August after paying off debts owed to HM Revenue & Customs and Charterhouse Commercial Finance Plc.

The club are also looking to fund a move from their Roots Hall home to a new stadium at Fossetts Farm, which has been in the pipeline since 2006.
