Southend twice fought back from a goal down to earn a draw at Macclesfield.
The hosts took the lead when Tyrone Barnett set up Colin Daniel and he hooked in a fine volley from 10 yards.
Barnett headed against the bar before Antonio German, signed on loan from QPR on Friday, converted a penalty after Toto Nsiala's trip on Sofi Zabooub.
Nathaniel Brown's diving header put Macc back in front but substitute Barry Corr forced a replay, poking home after Ryan Hall had failed to clear a cross.
Macclesfield manager Gary Simpson told BBC Radio Manchester: "We certainly took the initiative twice but I always thought we needed to get two clear of Southend.
"For the financial factor every penny counts at this football club but we probably could have done without an extra game.
"If there was a better centre forward display than Tyrone Barnett's I haven't seen it. He was tremendous and I think the strides he's made this year have been huge."
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "I was very surprised at the way we lost the two goals, but credit to the team, they came out and put a lot of balls in the box.
"The boy Ryan Hall came on and did exactly what I expected of him and he turned the game.
"With going down twice and coming back we'll take it. We're in the draw for the next round which is the important thing."
