Southend boss Steve Tilson in loyalty pledge

Steve Tilson
Tilson took charge at Southend in November 2003.

Southend United manager Steve Tilson says he has never contemplated quitting the job at Roots Hall.

The Blues could be relegated from League One if they don't beat Oldham this weekend and have had problems with tax bills and wage payments recently.

But Tilson told BBC Essex he is committed to the job: "I'd never walk away. I'm not that type of person, however difficult it was.

"I don't give up. As tough as it's been, you've got to keep going."

Last week, Blues chairman Ron Martin said he intended to sit down and discuss a new contract with Tilson once the season was over.

Southend are seven points from safety with just three games to play and have won just one of the last 19 games.
