Southend hit by season-ending injury to winger Scannell
Damien Scannell will miss the rest of Southend's season
Southend United's hopes of avoiding relegation have been hit by a season-ending injury to their in-form winger Damien Scannell.
Scannell, 24, limped off after an hour of Tuesday's impressive 3-0 victory over Walsall at Roots Hall.
The club has confirmed he has a broken metatarsal (small bone in the foot).
Speaking after the Walsall game, Shrimpers' manager Steve Tilson said Scannell had been his most consistent performer in recent weeks.
Although Scannell will not require surgery, physio John Stannard told the club's website the former Eastleigh player will be out for between six and eight weeks.
"It's not displaced and will heal in its own given time, but unfortunately it looks like he won't play again this season," Stannard said.
