Southend United defender Osei Sankofa has been ruled out for at least six weeks with a knee injury.
A scan revealed the 24-year-old has cartilage damage.
Sankofa, who has played in Southend's last six matches, picked up the injury during the League One defeat against Southampton on Saturday.
He is unlikely to be back in the side until December but could be out for longer if it is decided he needs surgery to treat the problem.
Fellow defender Jean-Yves Mvoto returned to Roots Hall from parent club Sunderland this week after a spell out with a hip injury.
