The new surface will be ready by July

Southend United are taking steps to improve their home performances by completely relaying their pitch.

Head groundsman Ken Hare has overseen work which has seen the top layer of the surface removed, before it is treated and completely reseeded.

"You get a lot of annual meadow grass in there and it's not the best thing to play football on," he explained.

"We've removed all of the old rubbish grass on there and once it's all grown it will be a far superior surface."
