Francis joined Southend from Sheffield United in June 2006
Southend defender Simon Francis has said there is still time for United to work their way into contention for a play-off spot in League One.
The Shrimpers currently lie 14th in the table - 16 points shy of sixth-placed Millwall, and just seven ahead of the relegation zone.
But Francis told BBC Essex: "A couple of wins and we're back up there.
"If that happens maybe we can start talking about the top-half of the table and the play-offs."
Francis continued: "First we have to get out of where we are and not let people think we're in a relegation battle because it's not what we're thinking."
The problems with injuries and suspension that have beset the Essex club this season have seen full-black Francis also appear in central defence and midfield.
The 23-year-old admitted that, whilst it is not something he would normally choose to do, he was happy to help out however he could.
"It's good being able to play in a number of positions, and when I was younger I was always put around because I could do a job in different positions," said Francis.
"As you get older you want to hold down a position, but at this moment in time the fact that we need to pick up results means I'm happy to play anywhere for the gaffer."
