Hammell joined Southend from Motherwell in the summer of 2006 |
Southend defender Steven Hammell will now be sidelined for six weeks after his ankle injury flared up. The Scot, 25, was stretchered off during Saturday's friendly against Crawley with a suspected broken leg.
An initial scan showed he had only strained tendons, and would likely be out for three to four weeks.
But that recovery time has been extended after fresh X-rays and MRI scans revealed that he had torn both his lateral and medial ligaments.
Following the game, which Southend won 2-1, Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson was fuming about the challenge by Crawley's Tyrone Thompson which saw Hammell stretchered off after 31 minutes.
"It was a really bad challenge, and in any other game he would have been sent off," Tilson said at the time.
"It made the game worthless in the end."
Another consequence of the Crawley match is that forward Richie Foran will miss the start of the season with a three-match suspension, having been sent off against the Red Devils.
