Southend have been boosted by news that defender Steven Hammell could return to action earlier than expected. It was feared Hammell, 24, had torn a thigh muscle when he was stretchered out of the game at Stoke.
But following a scan Hammell, who had been an ever-present this season, could return to training in less than a week.
Club physio John Stannard told Southend's website: "After the scan the good news is there is no evidence of a muscle tear."
