Pettefer was a key player in the 2004/05 promotion-winning side |
Southend boss Steve Tilson has released midfielder Carl Pettefer. Pettefer, 25, joined the Shrimpers from Portsmouth, and was ever-present as they won promotion from League Two through the play-offs in 2005.
However, he made just 12 appearances last season as they claimed the League One title, and Tilson told the club website: "He was unlucky with injuries.
"His attitude was always different class, and it was definitely a hard decision letting him go."
Pettefer is the fifth player to leave Roots Hall this summer.
Andy Edwards was released earlier this month, while Shaun Goater and Bart Griemink have retired, and Mark Bentley and Duncan Jupp have both joined Gillingham.
