Southampton striker David Connolly has signed a new one-year contract to remain at St Mary's until the end of the 2010/11 season.

The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international said: "Hopefully I will be able to carry the impact I had on the team last year over to this year."

Connolly scored seven goals in 20 appearances last season.

He arrived on a free transfer in October following his release by Sunderland in the summer of 2009.

Connolly left the Black Cats after a succession of groin problems and the injury recurred last season, forcing him onto the sidelines for a lengthy spell.
