Southampton full-back Graeme Murty faces a long spell on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.
The former Reading captain, 34, was carried off on a stretcher during Tuesday night's Carling Cup defeat at home to Birmingham City.
Murty has made only four appearances since joining the Saints after a trial.
"It looks like we've lost him for some time and it's a real blow. It's not looking like a two-week job," Saints boss Alan Pardew told BBC Radio Solent.
