Saints boss Gordon Strachan is reported to have agreed a deal with Wolves manager Dave Jones for the 22-year-old Naylor, valued at around 2m. The deal could see Saints striker Kevin Davies move the other way to Molineux in a straight swap. Former Saints boss Jones, currently in hospital recovering from pneumonia, brought Davies back to Southampton from Blackburn in August 1999. Davies struggled to hold down a place in Southampton's first team last season. Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe refused to confirm the reports. He said: "Our policy is never to comment on any speculation until something is done." If Naylor does move to St Mary's it will inevitably heighten speculation over the future of Wayne Bridge.
Bridge has become a hot property since forcing his way into England's World Cup squad. Ironically, Naylor kept Bridge out of the England Under-21 team. Southampton are adamant that Bridge is not for sale, and that they are looking to build their squad. But Liverpool are said to be ready to pay in the region of 10m for Bridge, and Southampton may find that hard to turn down. |
